Background:

SQL Server 2008 provides the database component for SixBit. The first time you install, SixBit will download SQL Server 2008 and install its own instance for SixBit. SQL Server has many prerequisites and conditions for installation, one of them being a fresh reboot before installing. If the installation fails, it will ask you to reboot your computer and try again.

Symptom:

During the installation, users are informed that a reboot is necessary. After a reboot, and another attempt to install, the installation still says it requires a reboot. Multiple attempts always result in the reboot request.

Cause:

This is caused by a flag in the registry not getting correctly set. Having a Logitech Webcam is one know cause of this issue.

Solution:

You need to clear the registry setting that is causing this message. Follow these steps:

  • Go to Start|Run and enter "regedit" to open the registry editor.
  • Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
  • Delete the value in the PendingFileRenameOperations on the right
  • Run the installation again WITHOUT rebooting your computer.
